How Upscale API Works

Upscale API uses AI super-resolution models to enhance the resolution of images and videos. Send a media URL with a scale factor (2x or 4x), and the model reconstructs detail at the higher resolution rather than simply interpolating pixels. The result is a genuinely sharper image or video, not a blurry enlargement. Image upscaling typically processes in 2-5 seconds; video upscaling depends on duration. Developers integrate upscaling into media processing pipelines, print preparation workflows, and content delivery systems. A publishing platform can accept low-resolution user uploads and automatically upscale them for print. A video platform can offer resolution enhancement as a premium feature. Archive digitization projects use it to restore detail in scanned historical documents and photos. For images, the best results come from inputs that are at least 256x256 pixels -- extremely small thumbnails may not have enough information for the model to reconstruct. For video, 2x upscaling is recommended over 4x to balance quality and processing time. Use the cost estimate endpoint first for video upscaling, as costs scale with duration and resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a subscription to use Upscale API?
No. FairStack uses pay-per-use pricing. Add funds to your account and use any tool whenever you need it. There is no subscription, no monthly commitment, and no minimum spend.
What file formats does Upscale API support?
Upscale API outputs MP4. You can download results instantly after generation. All outputs are full quality with no watermarks.
How long does Upscale API take?
Most generations complete in 15-60 seconds depending on duration and resolution. Processing time depends on the complexity of your input and the selected quality settings. You can monitor progress in real time.
Can I use Upscale API outputs commercially?
Yes. All outputs generated on FairStack include a commercial-use license. You can use them in client work, products, marketing materials, social media, and any other commercial context.
What input and output formats does the Upscale API support?
Images: accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP; outputs PNG at the upscaled resolution. Video: accepts MP4, WebM; outputs MP4. A 1024x1024 image at 4x outputs 4096x4096. CDN-hosted URLs are returned for direct download.
Can I use upscaled media commercially?
Yes. The upscaled output carries the same license as the original. If you have commercial rights to the input media, the enhanced version is equally licensed for commercial use. No additional fees or restrictions apply.
What are the size limits and processing times?
Images up to 4096x4096 input are supported (output up to 16384x16384 at 4x). Video upscaling supports clips up to 60 seconds. Image processing takes 2-5 seconds. Video processing takes 30-120 seconds depending on length and scale factor. Use async mode for video upscaling.
